Somewhere over the rainbow

Super Junior [10]’s 4th full-length album was released and E.L.F’s rejoiced. Suju will be making their stage comeback at this week’s Music Bank, but before you start loading up those live streams, have you given the album a try? Admittedly, I haven’t (mostly because the title song, ‘Bonamana’, reminds me of the girl group Bananarama and their 80’s hit ‘Cruel Summer’ one of the greatest songs ever produced) but ‘Sorry, Sorry pt. 2′ is catchy as all hell (the choreography is pretty cool), and will thus be a hit. If you are still undecided about taking the full plunge into Super Junior World, maybe this comprehensive album review courtesy of the group’s official web site will help you make an informed decision:

1. 미인아 (BONAMANA)
Lyrics, Composed & Arranged by YOO, YOUNG JIN
The title song of the 4th album, ‘BONAMANA’ is a ‘SJ FUNKY (SUPER JUNIOR FUNKY)’ song, the style that Super Junior is going to pursue continuously, and it was composed by the hit-maker, Young-Jin Yoo.
‘SJ FUNKY’ songs have already been introduced to music fans through ‘SORRY, SORRY’ and Super Junior M’s ‘Super Girl’ and ‘BONAMANA’ is considered the best work in this genre as much as the composer devoted himself to the song.
The combination of the cheerful groove of Afro tom (a percussive instrument) suggesting the dynamic African rhythm and the house beat, and the powerful riff of the Jupiter synth (a synthesizer sound source) suggesting the aggressive motions of Korean mask dancers are quite impressive, and also the lyric perfectly fits the mood of the song by describing the sincerity of a man trying to win the heart of the girl he fell in love with in witty and humorous words.

2. 나쁜 여자 (Boom Boom)
Korean Lyrics by Kenzie
Composed by Hayden Bell / Wayne Beckford / Ray Lavender Arranged by Kenzie

‘Boom Boom’ is a hip hop characterized by dark and intense mood and the powerful groove like the title that makes body move to the beat, and it presents new type of charms of Super Junior. Going along with the sexy mood of the song, the lyric depicts a man who beholds and praises the girl he ran into and is so perfect that he can’t even dare to talk to.

3. 응결 (Coagulation)
Lyrics, Composed & Arranged by Chang-Hyun Park
This is the renowned ballad composer Chang-Hyun Park’s 4th work for Super Junior. The lyric likened the moment of meeting fervent heart with the coldness of the leaving lover to the drops of water on the window in the winter. This song becomes more impressive with the sound that vividly expresses the sensuous mood of the lyric and the mature vocalism of Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, and Yesung who control the flow of the song at will with their touching voices as the song reaches the climax.

4. 나란 사람 (Your Eyes)
Lyrics by Jung-Bae Kim Composed & Arranged by Kenzie
‘Your Eyes’ is a duet by Yesung and Kyuhyun and it is the song that gives the elegant sensibility of original R&B ballad. The sad and touchy voice of Yesung and Kyuhyun double the mood of the song that describes the pain felt from the inability to express the feeling toward the love. Comparing the characteristics and charms of two voices throughout the song is also interesting.

5. My Only Girl
Korean Lyrics by Ji-Yu Hong
Composed by Brandon Fraley / Joshua Welton, Arranged by Han-Jin Yoo
Additional Composed by Kenzie

‘My Only Girl’ is a trendy medium tempo dance song with elegant melody flow standing out throughout the song. Simple dance rhythm, electronic synth sound, and chic melody line are perfectly combined with more mature vocal skills of Super Junior to make the song more attractive.

6. 사랑이 이렇게 (My All Is In You)
Korean Lyrics by Kwon-Yun Jung
Composed by Luther “Squeak” Jackson / Stephen Beckham
Arranged by Tae-Sung Kim / Tae-Ryung Roh

‘My All Is In You’ is a medium tempo pop ballad with dynamic vocal, and the lyric expressing the sadness of a man before parting is impressively contrasted with the warm mood of the song. Elegant melody and perfect improvisation present more mature sensibility and vocal skills of Super Junior, being expected to become another favorite Super Junior song of the fans.

7. Shake It Up!
Lyrics by Young-hu Kim (Xperimental Music)
Composed & Arranged by Ryan Jhun / Antwann Frost / Ronald Frost / Micheal Muncie / C-2

‘Shake It Up!’ has an impressive hook made of Vintage Synth and acoustic sound, and its exciting mood encourages listeners to dance to the beat while listening to the song. The lyric also tells listeners to free themselves from boring daily routine and things that make them sad and be cool and have fun along with the mood of the song to maximize the dynamic mood of the song.

8. 잠들고 싶어 (In My Dream)
Lyrics by Kwon-Yun Jung
Composed by Ji-Hu Kim
Arranged by Kenzie

‘In My Dream’ is a ballad created with the rich sound from the real session and interesting composition that have clear stages of introduction, development, turn and conclusion. The sad lyric depicts the day after seeing the old love in the dream and the melody awakes the sensibility of the listeners.

9. 봄날 (One Fine Spring Day)
Korean Lyrics by Kwon-Yun Jung
Composed & Arranged by MAGNUS ANDERSSON

‘One Fine Spring Day’ is Ryeowook’s first solo, and the warm and sensible melody placed on beautiful piano and string brings out the sweet voice of Ryeowook. The lyric based on the actual experience of the lyricist depicts the yearning toward the beloved family in heaven.

10. 좋은 사람 (Good Person)
Lyrics & Composed by Hui-Yeol Yoo Arranged by Kenzie
Toy’s ‘Good Person’ was remade in Super Junior’s unique style by keeping the sweet and beautiful emotion of the original version while making it trendy with electronica, giving a rebirth to ‘Good Person.’

11. Here We Go
Korean Lyrics by Yi-Na Kim
Composed by Carl Utbult / Tebey Ottoh / Fredrik Hult
Arranged by Sung-Je Hwang (BJJ Music)

‘Here We Go’ is a pop dance that gives the feeling to the listener as if being the concert through the sound of repeated guitar riffs and cheerful rhythm. The happy mood and exciting rhythm maximize Super Junior’s bubbly and cheerful character that the song refreshes listeners’ feelings.
